It is clear from pre- and post-program assessment scores as well as teacher and parent feedback that this program gets dramatic results. In exit interviews, teachers reported that students gained up to one entire grade level per six months in the program. Parents also comment that their children have a renewed, even new-found, enthusiasm for reading. National research supports the evidence for the Children’s Program
and indicates that elementary students' reading scores can be correlated
to the amount of time each day spent reading outside of school. This research
indicates that students who read an average of 1.8 minutes each day score
in the 30th percentile, while students who read an average of 20 minutes
a day score in the 90th percentile.* Students enrolled the TLP Children’s
Program receive this extra 18 minutes of reading time. Children are assessed according to the PALS Spelling Program from the University of Virginia and the Qualitative Reading Inventory. These assessments are coupled with teacher and tutor observations, student portfolios, and teacher reports. We also measure our results based on evaluations and reports from the parents. All students, children and adults alike, are asked to self-report at the end of each session of study. These evaluations are used to address obstacles that may impede the learning process for some students. The average child in the program progresses one full grade level per
six month session of study. The average adult progresses the equivalent
of three levels of spoken English per six months.
