Let Teton Literacy Program Expand Your Horizons This Summer!
The Teton Literacy Program would like to extend our deepest thanks to the Community Foundation and the Wyoming Arts Council for awarding the following grants to our programs:
Grant funds from the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole will enable staff to expand our current children's after-school tutoring program and increase our capacity to serve 60 students in the upcoming school year. However, increasing the number of students served is not enough to impact this urgent community need. Funding will also increase the quality of this program, ensuring student growth and success. Student achievement directly relates to their interest in the text: they need access to books they can and will read. Newly purchased fiction and non-fiction books will be used to build student’s libraries at home. These funds will also help us to make training more accessible and convenient for volunteer tutors by providing online training sessions. Online training will include class observations, sample lessons, tutor debriefs and provide new ideas for activities. Staff will provide tutors with monthly newsletters, providing technical and community support for these critical volunteers.
The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole also approved funds to support our adult Language Exchange Programming. Teton Literacy Program aides in the integration process of immigrants by implementing a new language exchange component into Spanish and English classes. A 15 minute period of each class will bring English and Spanish students together to practice both languages. Integrating language exchange into every class will lead to faster language learning and to a better-integrated community. We will be able to affect all our adult students, an anticipated 600 community members in fiscal year 2010/11.
A Wyoming Arts Council grant will partially fund the Children’s Program 5th Grade Poetry Project. Students in five classrooms will have the opportunity to explore great poetry, create their own, and perform poetry based on the unit developed from Susan Radley Brown. Watch for the "Poem a Day" bookmarks in coffee shops and other locations around our community!
