Initiated in 2000 as a way to bring literacy activities to more students, the I Can! Book Project instills a love of writing through a hands-on, group experience that turns students into authors. The I Can! Book Project brings local authors, artists and performers into classrooms to help students conceptualize, create, write, and illustrate stories that are bound together and published as a coloring book. This project addresses Grade Level Standards, as well as the School Improvement Team goal of implementing the Six-Trait Writing Model. It addresses Language Arts Standards in grade 2 including Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing Standards. Additionally, students’ written work becomes clearer and more thoughtful, and reading comprehension improves. This project, supported yearly through private funding from the Schaffner and Choi-Cornali families, has been recognized by the Colorado Council of the International Reading Association, Wyoming Public Radio, and the Wyoming Arts Council.
