The Teton Literacy Program offers programs to ensure that all children
can read on grade level. We offer the following programs for children:
After School Tutoring Program
Students and volunteer tutors form animated reading partnerships, meeting
one to two hours per week. Objectives are met by coordinating individual
tutoring sessions where students receive one-to-one attention and tutors
use specific lesson plans written by TLP staff. This program is for children
in grades 1 and 2.
Buddy Reading
The Buddy Reading program connects students with a TLP volunteer, a "Buddy
Reader." It is the longest-standing component of the Children’s
Program. Classroom teachers refer students who can greatly benefit from
reading an additional one hour each week. This program is for children
in grades 3,4, and 5.
In-School Support
Local classroom teachers can request assistance from a trained TLP volunteer,
who will offer support by creating smaller reading groups, working one-on-one
with students, and providing teacher assistance during reading time.
After School Student Workshops TLP staff members teach one hour workshops once a week for ten weeks for grades 1 and 2. Students are grouped by their specific needs, and focus of the workshops is placed on phonics skills and comprehension strategies. Summer Workshops for Students
Four workshops per summer are offered on a variety of fun and exciting
topics. These week-long workshops give students an opportunity to develop
their reading and writing skills in a small group setting.
Sounds Like Fun for Fives and Under
Children five years and under are invited to join the Sound Houns and bring along a parent for fun. Children will enjoy a story and activities to hear, distinguish, and identify sounds in words, blending sounds, segmenting words into sounds and manipulating those sounds into spoken words.
Parent Workshops
The Director of Children’s Services presents workshops for parents and students in grades 1-5 six times a year. These workshops provide parents with skills to support reading and writing development at home. The workshops are free and open to all parents in Teton County. Delve into Joining Children’s Programs
for information on how students collaborate with tutors and see Measuring
Success to read about the results.
