Work-Based Program
The Adult Program provides services to English language learners, Spanish language learners, and native English speakers seeking to improve their literacy and language skills.
Our classes and exchange programs are learner-centered in order to empower our students and to serve their demands. Students are encouraged to set their own goals and to contribute to the decisions on class topics. Mostly, classes focus on life-skills. English language learners will, for example, study what to do in emergency situations or how to find housing. Spanish language learners might study travel vocabulary or how to communicate with Spanish speaking co-workers. Our programs help students be more functional in a community.
Besides literacy and language instruction we strive to aid the integration of English language learners into the community and furthermore to connect our students of different nationalities. All classes and tutoring sessions include cultural topics in order to increase awareness of differences and similarities between diverse cultures. Additionally, we connect Spanish and English students in language exchanges. Language exchanges happen during class time, in communicative activities attended by both English and Spanish speakers and in one-on-one settings. One-on-one language exchange would consist of a native English speaker assisting a Spanish native speaker with language learning and vice versa.
In a variety of ways, the adult program provides lifelong learning opportunities for community members and helps bridge the gap between cultures and languages.
